Winnie Chen
Winnie Chen began their professional cooking career at 19. What started as a part-time job to help them through school evolved into a fulfilling and passionate career. Along with partners from the Common Group, they launched Fu's Repair Shop, a restaurant that has earned a spot on EnRoute Magazine's longlist for Canada's Best New Restaurants. Additionally, it has received Edify Magazine's award for Best New Restaurant, along with accolades in the Best Cocktails and Date Night categories, and is now the reigning Best Overall according to the publication. The restaurant has even been featured in Forbes Magazine as a must-visit dining destination, contributing to Edmonton's recognition as one of the top travel destinations in the world.
Chen has also built an exceptional and diverse kitchen team that they proudly lead each day. The space nurtures creativity, growth, and teamwork, enabling their team to cook with passion and love—qualities they believe have contributed to the restaurant’s widespread success.
When they’re not at Fu’s, they can be found helping with the city’s Chinatown revitalization efforts through her project with her brother Will; Boa and Hare, a dual cafe and bar in the neighbourhood. Or playing and coaching women’s and youth rugby, advocating for its growth in the community. Together, these qualities have landed them a spot on Edmonton’s Top40 Under40 class of 2024.
